Biography
Anna Ramzy is an Irish-Egyptian composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and sound designer with a 1st Class Honours Bachelor of Music Degree from Ulster University and a Diploma in Music Performance from London College of Music.
Currently she is Ulster Touring Opera's inaugural Composer in Residence. Supported by The Arts Council of Northern Ireland and National Lottery's 'Minority Ethnic Artists Mentoring and Residency Programme', Anna has worked with and received mentoring from renowned artists Greg Caffrey, Giselle Allen and Dafydd Hall Williams. She has also received tutoring in Composition from Oliver Searle, Tom Wilson and Stuart MacRae at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
As a soprano, Anna has been singing classical, jazz, blues, folk and musical theatre from the age of 11. She achieved a diploma in music performance and grade 8 singing by the age of 18. Alongside composing, Anna teaches singing, piano, composition and music theory to students at Enact Music. She has performed in numerous choral and solo concerts throughout her education. This includes performing as a Chorus Soprano in Ulster University Choir, as a Solo and Backup Singer in Ulster University Jazz Band and as a Chorus and Solo Soprano in Dominican College, Fortwilliam's Chamber, Senior and Junior Choirs and concerts. These concerts have taken her across Northern Ireland, with notable highlights being performing at Ulster University seasonal concerts, the Flax-Trust-Inter-Community School's Award, Ballymena Festival, Northern Ireland Hospice Services and with Barry Douglas and Camerata Ireland. With the voice as her primary instrument, this offers a compositional perspective that provides a thorough understanding of both melody and harmony and a distinctive, drama led writing style.
Anna's latest project is based on Oscar Wilde's 'Lady Windermere's Fan'; a short opera work in collaboration with Ulster Touring Opera. In July 2024 this piece was workshopped in Queen's University Belfast's 'Sonic Arts Research Centre' with the Hard Rain Soloist Ensemble and opera singers Anna Gregg and Eoin Foran. It was then further developed in August 2024 at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with expanded instrumentation and performed by the RCS Ensemble.
